The 14th International Handbell Symposium
Composition Contest

1. Entry music should be an original composition or arrangement suitable for massed ringing by handbells. Transcriptions (*) will not be allowed. For an arrangement work, entrants must clear the
copyright of the original music before entry.

2. Content of the music should reflect the theme of the 14th International Handbell Symposium, "Echoes for Peace."

3. Duration of the music should be approximately less than 3 minutes.

4. Entry music should be for 3 to 5 (6) octaves of handbells. Use of instruments other than handbells is not preferred. Use of handchimes is acceptable.

5. Up to two entries per entrant will be accepted. Entry music should be unpublished work that was not / has not been made public, entered in other competitions, nor is in the process of publication from any publisher.

6. Entry music should be written using notation for Handbells. "Title of the music" and "Handbell Used chart" should be provided at the top of the first page. Entrants may also provide his/her comment about the music / performance note.

7. All the submitted documents including the entry music will not be returned to the entrant.

8. The Handbell Ringers of Japan will reserve the rights of the first public performance and publication of the winning music.

9. The winning music will be performed at the 14th International Handbell Symposium in 2010. The Jury for the contest will select a single entry to be published and performed as the winning music unless otherwise decided by "the Committee of Music" of the International Handbell Symposium. If there is not an appropriate entry, no award will be offered.

10. Prize of one hundred thousand yen (100,000yen) will be offered to the winning composer or arranger.

11. "The Committee of Music" of the 14th International Handbell Symposium will serve as the jury of the contest.

12. All the entries should be received by the office of the Handbell Ringers of Japan at the following address by 30 June, 2009. Entrants should provide contact information in print on a separate sheet (not on the music), as the winner will be notified of the result by postal mail.
